You are unable to directly change a Miscellaneous bank account to an Operating account in Inn-Flow. The system prevents this because the two account types serve different purposes, and switching between them has the potential to cause the Balance Sheet to be out of balance along with other errors in your Daily Activity and bank reconciliation data.
Why You Can't Simply Change the Type
Operating accounts are tied to your hotel's daily operations. They flow into Daily Activity Entry (DAE) and are available for bank reconciliation. When transactions post through DAE, they hit the Operating account and are expected to reconcile against your bank feed.
Warning: Before you begin this process, make sure any open bank reconciliations on the Miscellaneous account are completed and finalized. If you have an in-progress reconciliation, finish it first. Leaving a reconciliation open while you move balances between accounts can cause discrepancies that are difficult to track down. You should also confirm that no pending Daily Activity entries reference this account.
Steps to Move to an Operating Account
Instead of changing the type, you will create a new Operating account and transfer the outstanding balance from the Miscellaneous account. Here is how to do it:
Go to Accounting > Accounts and click Add Account. Set the account type to Operating, enter the bank details, and save. This will be the new account that replaces the Miscellaneous one. (Note: If you receive an error that the account numbers cannot be the same, return to the Misc Account, and add a 0 in the account number field.)
Identify or create a Balance Sheet clearing account (sometimes called a "suspense" or "transfer" account) in your Chart of Accounts. This account will temporarily hold the balance as you move it between the two bank accounts.
In the new Operating account, enter any outstanding transactions using the clearing account as the offset. This brings the correct balance into the Operating account while keeping the Balance Sheet in balance.
In the original Miscellaneous account, enter offsetting adjustments to the same clearing account to zero out the remaining balance. Each adjustment should mirror what you posted to the Operating account so the clearing account nets to zero.
Verify that the Miscellaneous account balance is now zero and that the clearing account also nets to zero.
Once the Miscellaneous account balance is zero, go to Accounting > Accounts, find the old Miscellaneous account, Edit Account, and set it to Inactive. This removes it from your active account list without deleting the historical data.
Tip: After completing this process, review the Daily Activity Setup page to ensure that the correct account is selected for each Deposit Type.
